Alopecia One common form of hair loss is Alopecia Areata (AA), an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles on the scalp, face and body. AA is characterized by hair loss in small, round patches, and can clear up on its own or last for years. There is no cure for AA, and only the body can eliminate it. Contact Dermatitis Contact Dermatitis is an allergic reaction to a substance that makes direct contact with the skin, usually the face, and it is characterized by redness, swelling, itching and scaling. While this condition can occur at any age, the facial version commonly appears in young and middle-aged adults. Common allergens blamed for the appearance of contact dermatitis include rubber, metals, acrylates, pine resin, sunscreen ingredients and hair care products. While patients can treat contact dermatitis with topical corticosteroids available over-the-counter, long-term use of such medications can cause thinning of the skin, rosacea and even cataracts when used near the eye. Skin Cancer and Pre-cancer Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancer, and affects over one million people in the U.S. each year. Although skin cancer is most commonly the result of sun overexposure, there are other factors that can put people at risk for skin cancer, including family history, and the repeated exposure to x-rays and hazardous chemicals. There are four known types of skin Cancer : • Actinic Keratoses – pre-cancer • Basal Cell Carcinoma • Squamous Cell Carcinoma • Malignant Melanoma Actinic Keratoses Known as the earliest stage of skin cancer development, actinic keratoses is characterized by small, scaly spots typically found on the face, head, neck, ears, lower arms and back of the hands. Although high-SPF sunscreens can help prevent actinic keratoses in spite of previous sun damage, some actinic keratoses may progress rapidly, and require extensive treatment. As a result, Allenby Dermatology offers an array of treatment options to help counter their effects. Basal Cell Carcinoma The most common type of all cancer, basal cell carcinoma can be found in fair- and dark-skinned people. These small raised bumps, nodules or reddish-colored patches typically appear on the face, neck, hands and body. Since squamous cell carcinoma can metastasize, early detection and treatment is essential. It can cause considerable local damage if it penetrates beneath the skin to the bone and nerves which can become disfiguring if left untreated. Malignant Melanoma The most deadly of all cancers, malignant melanoma occurs in fair- and dark-skinned people, and causes thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year. Excessive sun exposure, heredity, and the presence of pre-existing atypical moles can all be risk factors for developing melanoma. Warning signs include changes in the size, shape and surface of a mole, as well as itching, scaliness, pain, oozing, bleeding, and newly-found bumps.
