Restylane® is a brand name for hyaluronic acid, which is a relatively modern development in the field of cosmetic treatments. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally-occurring substance present in the body, particularly in fluid around the eyes and joints, that acts as a cushion and lubricant. HA is hydrophilic–meaning it draws water to itself–which helps keep the skin around it moist and plump.
REFYNE and DEFYNE are hyaluronic acid-based gels that are specifically designed to be extremely flexible. They were developed by Restylane® in response to feedback from potential customers whose central concern was retaining a ‘natural’ look after cosmetic treatment. There are hyaluronic acid fillers on the market already, but only REFYNE and DEFYNE contain the patented XpressHAn formulation for the best elasticity.
REFYNE and DEFYNE are two very similar products from Restylane® with only a few distinctions. REFYNE is approved for treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines, a.k.a. laugh lines. DEFYNE, on the other hand, is approved for the same treatment but is formulated to provide more support for deep lines and wrinkles.
How does REFYNE and DEFYNE work?
REFYNE and DEFYNE are injectable hyaluronic acid gels. They’re minimally invasive, and solve a variety of facial aging concerns. Some examples:
- Smooth out creases between nose and mouth (laugh lines)
- Fill out hollows and sunken eyes
- Plump up thin lips
- Smooth and fill indents from acne scars or chicken pox
- Plump sunken or gaunt cheeks
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fills out creases and wrinkles by drawing moisture to the area, resulting in skin that’s plump, moist, and lively. HA is not to be confused with Botox, which works to eliminate the muscle movement around the eyes that causes wrinkles, or crow’s feet. Many patients choose to utilize both Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, which together can produce a significantly more youthful look.
What can I expect?
Restylane® REFYNE and DEFYNE treatments are minimally invasive, practically painless injection procedures that often take only a few minutes to administer per area. A patient is administered a topical numbing cream or lidocaine depending on the area being treated, and the filler injections take between 15-30 minutes per injection site.
